KEF Infra builds MEITRA Hospital in Kerala using offsite manufacturing technology

August 8th, 2017

State-of-the-art technology and infrastructure facility completed within 18 months, KEF endeavors to bring world-class healthcare to India.

Kerala, 8th August 2017: KEF Infra, a new era technology company based out of Bangalore, manufactured the world-class 400,000 sq. ft. MEITRA Hospital, using offsite building technology, within 18 months. This is one of the fastest completed hospital project's in Kerala. 100 percent of the design and 70 percent of the manufacturing was completed offsite, at KEF Infra's state-of-the-art factory at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu using the latest technology in offsite construction. KEF has successfully bridged the gap between architecture, engineering and technology, while reducing considerable environmental impact, and is all set to define the future of healthcare facilities through this hospital.

Today, India has only 1.3 hospital beds per 1,000 people, which is significantly lower than the 3.5 beds defined by the World Health Organization and severely disproportionate to the size of the population. The main challenges of healthcare development are high costs, the disruption caused by conventional construction methods, the lack of transparency, corruption and a generally chaotic development environment. Offsite manufacturing and prefabrication mitigates these challenges by a large measure. Besides ensuring access to quality healthcare facilities, the scale and potential of prefabrication could also go a long way in furthering India's position as a medical tourism destination, as it is well-connected to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Middle East, among others.

With an aim to channel its business energies towards creating a better world and resolving some of the developing world's most fundamental problems, KEF collaborated with Australian design firm, TAHPI, to develop both the design and the healthcare planning of the MEITRA hospital model.  Based on the three principles of standardization, industrialization, and commoditization, this will lead to cost - benefits in delivery, maintenance, operations and sustainability of the healthcare facility. Revolutionizing healthcare design and construction across emerging markets, the KEF-TAHPI Design Studio in UAE has created information catalogues with 50 functional planning units, as well as 500 unique rooms types - each fully specified, pre-designed and engineered with multiple permutations that can be used to manufacture hospitals of any size or specialization. Through the catalogue hospitals concept, KEF is pioneering a fast and reliable solution to meet the healthcare needs of a fast-growing population.

Mr. Faizal E Kottikollon, Founder and Chairman of KEF Infra and Chairman of the Board, MEITRA Hospital, said, "Within India, we are currently developing a number of other projects in the healthcare space and are looking to collaborate with Indian healthcare developers and providers to deliver word-class facilities in record time, across the country. With the launch of MEITRA Hospital, we expect to generate a strong interest in our offering, that we hope will convert to a robust pipeline of projects over the next year. We have turnkey models and solutions that can address the unique needs of hospital projects and also leverage our strong international partnerships to help build a well-rounded healthcare experience. With the offsite manufacturing approach, we can handover a complete mapping of the hospital to the developer, as well as an operating manual on how to best utilize and manage the facility. In the long run, we believe this will be the way forward to bring efficiencies in healthcare design and development in India."

MEITRA Hospital has a built-up area of over 400,000 sq. ft. and hosts 500 beds (Phase 1, 209 completed) 28 consulting rooms, 7 state-of-the-art operating theatres, 6 emergency units and 52 Individual Intensive Care Suites, setting global benchmarks in healthcare experience.
